I bet you’ve never seen one of these in person. You probably know that the Checker Cab company sold a few public versions of their famous cab sedan. (Note: revised) They also produced a stretched version called the Aerobus that was mostly used for airport and hotel service.
I saw this a few times passing by and assumed it was some sort of Chrysler stationwagon since I couldn’t really see the back. But when I stopped to take a picture of it I realized that this had to be a Checker. But there’s a bonus. Click on the first picture and look closely at the side windows. This thing has EIGHT DOORS! After a little research it looks like Checker made not only a 8 door, but an 6 door also! The 5 minutes on Google extensive research I have done indicates that the 8 door was far more common, the six door is extremely rare.
I bet if I track down the owner of the lot he would sell it to me for $50. This would be a cool daily driver, painted School Bus Yellow with a checkered stripe on the side of course. Or maybe rodded out, hood snorkel, huge drag slicks in back, with candy-apple red paint and flames on the front.

Knew a girl in Ft. Lauderdale whose grandpa was from NYC…go figure. He missed NYC soooo bad that he bought a Checker Cab. Turned out that it was based on a Chevy Malibu (early 80s).
I have seen a 6-door Checker Wagon on the street…for hire no less. My guess is that the NYC regs required them to have 6 doors, why else?

We had the 6-door version (I grew up in suburban Chicago) in the sixties. It was blue…the color of this rusting one in the picture. We commonly saw the 8-door version at O’Hare Airport, but I only remember seeing one other 6-door version (a green one near Kalamazoo, MI) my whole life! We got stares wherever we went and we took that Checker Cab (we nicknamed ours the Blumberbus)throughout North America. It lived a long life and had a second one hauling lawn supplies long after we had put 100,000+ miles on it. In fact, I first thought this one pictured could have been ours!

My high school had an 8 door aerobus that we used to take the tennis team to matches. We called it the weenie wagon. It was pretty fun to drive all over the state of Oklahoma in that beast.
