One Bad Dude
One Bad Dude

Those of us who grew up in the 70’s remember the baddest dude there was… Evel Knievel. Older people remember him as much for his failures and problems, but that dude was fearless and busted himself up many times in an effort to do things not done before (or since) on a motorcycle.

In 1978, at age eight, I saw Evel in person and got his autograph. Ironically it was for the “Grand Opening” of Eastdale Mall in Montgomery, Alabama. Without a helmet and not bothering to take the cigarette out of his mouth, he did a few wheelies down a side road and roared up to were a bunch of us kids were waiting. He shut the bike off, grabbed a pen and a stack of photographs, and started giving out autographs.  For free.  Everyone who wanted one got one, then he fired up his bike and rode off.  There were other “celebrities” there that day, but no one could compare to Evel.

Someone posted video of his first televised jump on YouTube.  I was shocked to see him in a standard suit and tie, being pleasant.  Nice find.  Enjoy.
